Art Nouveau Insect Stickpin

The Gold Bug!

The diamond-set head, elongated shield-shape body and golden forelegs of this abstractly rendered insect are framed by dramatically outward sweeping wings.  A wonderful example of the imaginative Art Nouveau designs of the early 1900s  Crafted in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

This beautifully crafted stickpin was created by Alling & Company,  a maker of fine stickpins, cufflinks and other jewels from 1843 to 1915.  The firm created jewelry for Tiffany & Company, Starr & Marcus, and other leading jewelers of the day

The maker's mark for Alling & Company, a shamrock enclosing a "14" and an "A" in the petals, is stamped on the reverse of the stickpin to the lower left (see photograph below).

Cost:  $475

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is just over 2 1/2" long and weighs 2.3 grams.  The top is  5/8" tall and 9/16" wide.
