Dragon and Diamond StickpinDragon and Diamond! |
A fierce dragon protectively cradles a small
sparkling diamond. The Victorians loved to enliven their
jewels with a teeming menagerie of dragons, griffins, basilisks
and other fantastic beasts. This example is beautifully
crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
This stickpin was created by Alling & Company. The firm created elegant jewels from the mid 1800s to 1915. Their jewels were sold by many prominent jewelers of the day, including Tiffany & Company, Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Bigelow, Kennard in Boston. The maker's mark for Alling & Co., a shamrock enclosing "14" and an "A", is stamped on the reverse. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as carefully crafted as the front. A sturdy pin stem is attached to the solid back of the dragon with a secure gold collet. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
