Winged Lion and Pearl Stickpin

Winged Lion and Pearl!

The Victorians loved to populate their stickpins and small jewels with a menagerie of fantastic and mythological creatures.  This charming example features a winged lion with a flowing tail of acanthus leaves and elegant scrolls.  He grasps a small pearl in his maw.  Beautifully crafted in 14kt gold,  circa 1900.

This richly detailed stickpin was created by the Victorian jewelry makers,  Alling & Company.  The firm created elegant jewels from the mid 1800s to 1915.  The jewels were sold by many prominent jewelers of the day, including Tiffany & Company, Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Bigelow, Kennard in Boston.  The maker's mark for Alling & Co.,  a shamrock enclosing "14" and an "A",  is stamped on the back.

The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as beautifully crafted as the front.  The sturdy pin stem is secured to the solid back of the winged lion.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is  2 1/8" in length and weighs 1.2 grams.  The winged lion is  1/2" tall and  1/2" wide.
