| The Victorians loved to populate their
stickpins and small jewels with a menagerie of fantastic and
mythological creatures. This charming example features a
winged lion with a flowing tail of acanthus leaves and elegant
scrolls. He grasps a small pearl in his maw.
Beautifully crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
This richly detailed stickpin was created by the Victorian jewelry makers, Alling & Company. The firm created elegant jewels from the mid 1800s to 1915. The jewels were sold by many prominent jewelers of the day, including Tiffany & Company, Bailey, Banks & Biddle and Bigelow, Kennard in Boston. The maker's mark for Alling & Co., a shamrock enclosing "14" and an "A", is stamped on the back. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as beautifully crafted as the front.
