Elegant Amethyst Stickpin

Art Nouveau amethyst stickpin (J9430).

Art Nouveau Fantasy

A rich amethyst rests in an imaginative setting with hints of Art Nouveau and Neoclassical design.  This wonderful stickpin was created by Day, Clark & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

The Art Nouveau era was a period of fervid creativity.  Jewels were often both wonderfully evocative and intriguingly enigmatic.  For example, the top of this stickpin could be seen as a big-headed cyclops poised to leap upward.  Or, perhaps, it is a  fantasy with hints of past civilizations like the fin de siecle furniture of Carlo Bugatti.  The interpretation is left to the imagination of the wearer.

Day, Clark was a maker of stickpins and other fine jewels from 1877 to about 1930.  The maker's mark of Day, Clark (the profile of a small barbell-style cufflink) is stamped on the upper side of the pin stem along with "14" for the purity of the gold.  The back of the gold top is solid to help protect the amethyst (photo below).

Cost:  $465

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is 2 7/8" long and weighs 1.8 grams.  The striking top is  5/8" tall and just over 5/8" wide.
