Krementz Lion Cufflinks

Roaring Lions!

A regal lion rises amid windblown grasses and announces his authority with a deafening roar.  The lion is beautifully sculpted with a flowing golden mane and fierce eyes.  A nice example of the richly detailed figural cufflinks created in the years around 1900.  Crafted by Krementz & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

This pair of leonine cufflinks is especially nice because the lions face each other.  This assures that on the cuff both lions will face forward.  Some cufflink makers used a single die to create both tops.  This would result in one lion facing forward on the cuff, while the other would either face backwards or be upside down.

These cufflinks have another nice surprise.  The backs, like the fronts, are decorated with roaring lions.

The backs of Victorian cufflinks were often left unfinished or occasionally engraved with the owner's initials.  As a result the backs looked plain and uninspired.  To remedy this around 1900 Krementz & Company created a beautiful series of cufflinks with decorated backs.  Like these regal lion cufflinks, the backs presented a smaller version of the fronts.

The cufflinks are well constructed.  The tops are attached to the decorated backs with sturdy curved bridges.  The elegance and simplicity of the design is mirrored in the maker's attention to finish and small details.

The bridges are stamped with the maker's mark of Krementz & Company - a stylized collar button somewhat resembling a nose and moustache.  The maker's mark is seen just to the right of the "14K" gold purity mark.  Founded in 1866, Krementz created elegant cufflinks and dress sets during the Victorian era through the first half of the 20th century.
