Art Nouveau Cufflinks

In the decades around 1900 Art Nouveau jewelers created imaginative jewels inspired by ancient civilizations, the mythic past and fantastic interpretations of nature.  These beautifully crafted cufflinks with their hint of ancient Egypt, or is it the Mayan civilization, are a bewitching example.  Created by Krementz & Company in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

The backs of the cufflinks are decorated with the same image as the front.  In the Victorian era the backs of cufflinks were often left plain or merely engraved with the wearer's initials.  Around 1900 Krementz and Company introduced a collection of cufflinks with decorated backs.  Known as "Krementz doubles" these cufflinks testify to the firm's attention to small details and the desire to create cufflinks that are beautiful from every direction.

The attention to detail is seen on the inside of the cufflinks.  Here, sturdy curved bridges securely attach the fronts and backs with Krementz's distinctive "crow foot" braces securing the tops.  The bridges are stamped with the Krementz maker's mark (a stylized collar button) and "14K" for the purity of the gold.

Krementz & Co. was founded in 1866 by George Krementz.  The firm created elegant cufflinks and other jewels during the late Victorian period and well into the 20th century.  The longevity of the firm was a testament to George Krementz's passion for creative design, quality craftsmanship and technical innovation.

Measurements:  These elegant 14kt gold cufflinks weigh a total of  5.1 grams.  The oval tops are  3/4" long and just over  1/2" wide.
