Victorian Serpent and Pearl Stickpin

Victorian stickpin of serpent with pearl. (J4803)

Questioning Serpent!

A fiery serpent clutches a white pearl and sinuously ebtwines itself around this elegant stickpin.  Beautifully crafted in 10kt gold,  this diminutive Victorian jewel dates from about 1890.

The serpent has the body of a snake and the head of an eagle which qualifies it as one of the menagerie of fantastic creatures  - Basilisks, Griffins, Chimeras -  that often graced late Victorian jewels.  In keeping with the Victorian fascination with hidden meanings,  the serpent is intriguingly twisted into a question mark.

Measurements:  This 10kt gold stickpin is  2.0" in length and weighs 0.7 grams.  The serpent is just over  0.5" tall and  0.375" wide.
The back of the stickpin is pictured below.  You can see that the serpent is well made and securely attached to the pin stem.
