Winged Lion and Sapphire StickpinGriffin and Sapphire! |
The Victorians loved small jewels populated with fantastic and mythological creatures. This beautifully sculpted stickpin features a winged lion-serpent fiercely guarding a bright blue sapphire. The tail of the lion-serpent flows beneath the sapphire with elegant scrolls and acanthus leaves. Beautifully crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.
The stickpin is not signed, but is attributed to Whiteside & Blank based on similar signed stickpins created by the firm. Whiteside & Blank was a maker finely detailed, wonderfully designed jewels during the late Victorian era and early 1900s. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as beautifully crafted as the front. The sturdy pin stem is secured to the solid back of the winged lion. The gold purity mark, "14K", is stamped to the lower right. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more fine stickpins in the Antique Stickpin Gallery. |
