Brassler Egyptian Revival Brooch

Egyptian Revival winged scarab brooch. (BR9564)

Scarab with Wings

A mottled greenish blue scarab soars with finely detailed wings.  This brooch in the Egyptian Revival taste was created by Hans Brassler, an imaginative jeweler who in the early 1900s created exquisite jewels that often found inspiration in past and distant cultures.  Crafted in 14kt gold circa 1910.

Hans Brassler was a gifted jewelry designer and goldsmith who rigorously attended to every detail of a jewel, even the smallest.  The above side view shows the depth of the carving of the scarab and the rich detail of the wings.  Brassler's goal was to create a jewel that was beautiful from every direction.

Brassler's craftsmanship can also be seen on the reverse of the brooch.  Note the crispness of the edges and the evenness of the gold surfaces.  The back of the scarab is left open to reveal part of a carved inscription.  Visible are symbols resembling "E" and "Z".

The brooch is secured when worn with a sturdy pin stem and broad C clasp.  The top of the clasp is stamped with the gold purity mark and the maker's mark of The Brassler Company  - "14B" inside a double oval.
