Art Nouveau Chimera Brooch

Carter dragon and crescent brooch. (J9384)

Dragon and the Moon

A magnificent chimera flies past the moon.  This beautifully sculpted dragon has a twisting, intricately scaled body, finely feathered wings and a tail that morphs into unfurling acanthus leaves.  A small green gem is set as the creature's watchful, jealous eye.  Created by Carter, Howe & Co. in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

This brooch is beautifully crafted with the dragon securely anchored along the sturdy frame of the crescent moon.  Victorian jewelers often took as much care with the structure and crafting of a jewel as they did with its beauty and design.  Note the sturdy "C" clasp and pin stem which secure the brooch when worn and the chatelaine hook to the right which allows a small watch or pendant to be suspended beneath the jewel.

This striking brooch was created by Carter, Howe & Co. (succeeded by Carter, Gough & Co.),  a maker of beautiful small brooches, elegant cufflinks and other fine jewels during the 19th and early 20th centuries.  The firm's mark, an arrowhead surrounding a small "C", is stamped on the clasp.  To the left of the maker's mark around the side of the clasp "14K" is stamped for the purity of the gold.
