French Chimera Stickpin

| A French chimera hungrily pursues a small
golden ball. This fierce gargoyle has the head of a an
eagle and body of a serpent that morphs into a vine decorated
with acanthus leaves. The acanthus leaf above his
watchful, hooded eye is an especially nice touch. Crafted
in 18kt gold, circa 1900.
French jewelers of the late 19th and early 20th century created a fantastic menagerie of creatures and mythical beasts. This beautifully designed, richly detailed stickpin is a wonderful example. The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) illustrates the care and sturdy manner in which the jewel was created. The French assay mark for 18kt gold (an eagle's head) and an indistinct maker's mark are stamped on the upper pin stem. Cost: Although this elegant stickpin has sold, you will find many more |

 The small indentations along the upper left of the pin stem are the French assay and maker's marks. The upper reverse of the chimera is stamped "DEPOSE" indicating that at one time the design was registered and protected in France. |
