Wise Owl Stickpin

Victorian owl stickpin. (J9249)

A Wise Owl!

A wise owl perches on a branch and watches with inquisitive, bright green eyes.  The owl is beautifully sculpted with finely detailed feathers and sturdy talons grasping the tree branch.  The bright eyes are likely demantoid garnets.  Crafted in 14kt gold, circa 1900.

The Victorians loved stickpins featuring wild birds and exotic animals.  The jewels often carried symbolic meanings or personal messages relevant to the wearer.  This stickpin is a wonderful example.  The breast of the owl is engraved with the Greek letters Κ, Φ and Β.  Perhaps the name of a fraternal, academic or secret society to which the original wearer belonged.

The reverse of the stickpin (pictured below) is as finely crafted as the front.  Hidden behind the pin stem is the maker's mark of A.J. Hedges & Co. (an "H" with "14" above and "K" below the cross bar).  A.J. Hedges was a maker of fine stickpins and other jewels during the late Victorian period and early 20th century.

Measurements:  This 14kt gold stickpin is  2 7/8" long and weighs 2.1 grams.  The owl and branch are  3/4" tall and  5/16" wide.
