Elegant Onyx and Gold Cufflinks

Carter, Howe Onyx cufflinks crafted in 14kt yellow gold. (J8789)

Carter Onyx!

A beautiful contrast between dark, black Onyx and antique yellow gold.  Created by Carter, Howe during the early 1900s, these cufflinks speak to the simple, yet rich, elegance of the time.  Crafted in Onyx and 14t gold,  circa 1900.

During the Victorian era (1835-1900), Onyx was most often associated with mourning jewelry.  However, by the turn of the century cufflinks and shirt studs crafted in Onyx and gold were de rigueur accessories for black tie attire.  These cufflinks are a wonderful example.

The reverse of these cufflinks are as beautifully crafted as the fronts.  The maker's attention to detail can be seen in the sturdy cross bars and brackets,  the crisp edges,  and the mirror-like finish of the yellow gold.

The cross bars are stamped with the maker's mark of Carter, Howe & Company (later Carter, Gough & Co.),  creators of fine gold and platinum cufflinks during the early decades of the last century.  The maker's mark is a small arrowhead surrounding the letter "C".  To the left of the maker's mark is the gold purity mark ("14K") for 14kt gold.
